TODAY THE WORDS ARE DILL PICKLES

TODAY THE WORDS are DILL PICKLES. Why oh why would I be choosing this subject? I happen to love dill pickles, but I am going to take you back some years. As a matter of fact, a lot of years have passed since my first experience of dill pickles. Most of you may be remembering the very first time that you put your first dill pickle in your mouth. Some of you were tricked into tasting it, thinking of the usual sweet taste to only have it burst into your mouth with a sour and tart taste instead. Right now, some of you are puckering up your face on that memory, I know I puckered my mouth and the taste buds started salivating. I say this to bring you up to the present. I acquired that savory taste and I grew to love dill pickles and time has proven, given a chance, we are open to spicy, tart, sour, and different tastes than our parents. We are in a period of food revolution and I am amused to see people who, in the past, would not have tried dill pickles as well as sushi, bratwurst, Mexican cuisine, Thai food, etc. We have given up a lot of resistance and have become more adventurous in our palette. How many of you remember the experience of trying things you never thought you would like only to find it among your favorite food now? Now for my deeper thought….we need to open our minds to more good things in this life. Sometimes, and I have been guilty on occasion myself, to get into a routine of like our Mother used to say, “I am set in my ways”. I am not talking about trying or experimenting with harmful addictive substances; I am talking about trying new foods, trying a Zumba dance class, taking a trip to one of this country’s historical places, a new hobby, reading, and for some of the ones that cling to non-technological ways get a computer, etc. Some of us have become stale and are hesitant to try something new and we sit at home; we don’t travel; we eat at home; we go to the same type of restaurant; we go to the same church; we are hesitant about taking a risk. I found out a long time ago, the more I try, the more I learn, the more I learn the more I can share what I have learned to others, and the more I share with others, the more I learn again. We are blessed with an opportunity to go forward, learn, share and give; why are we sitting on our sofas with this wonderful world God has given us? Today, pick up a dill pickle, remember how you squinted your face the first time and try something new today. Life is for living and not for being depressed. A lot of things are not fixable; a lot of things have to be endured; but if we are willing to try, life affords distractions from those very things. Dill pickle anyone?
