TODAY THE WORD is STEPS. This morning, the thought of how steps play into our lives came to me. One of the first descriptions people use is they took baby “steps” meaning as babies, the steps are small and babies have to make several steps to equal one adult step. Our first steps are not solid and usually are quite wobbly. As the toddler gets more experienced in the art of walking or as our grandsons did, running, they make progress and start outrunning parents. The word steps describes the structure of elevation separated by steps or stairs. We climb up them to get to higher levels. Some steps are more difficult to climb and we can get winded climbing the ones that seem to go to the sky. Steps can be used in describing a process such as Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, etc. and this gives us organizational maneuvers in “building a procedure, process, or plan. I wonder how the name “Step” has been given to describe a person that is added to another person’s life such as step father, step mother, step brother, or step sister. In the fairy tales, the word wicked  usually accompanied this title and therefore, I think a bad connotation was started. As there has been some bad “real” parents, I am sure some step parents have been rotten too. However, I have seen the opposite in a “step” parent coming into a child’s life and making a huge difference. I have seen step brothers and sisters bond as closely as it they were related by blood. I use this as the “stepping” stone for my deeper thought….Life is similar to “steps” as we start out as children, walk up to be young adults, climb higher as adults, and some times we fall backwards and we tumble back down and have to climb back up again. Life steps can be tricky, unstable and treacherous but if we have a handrail, it steadies our climb and can keep us from falling or tripping……in Life it is God who is our handrail for us to grab hold and make a steady upward climb. Climbing up the steps of life is important to our well being; standing still for a few minutes to catch our soul’s breath gives us the breath to move upward, and holding on to God while we climb is essential. As we move upward in life, be careful to step with firm, calm, steady steps.
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
