TODAY THE WORDS are EASTER EGG HUNT. Coloring or decorating an egg as a symbol of rebirth or fertility goes back to ancient times, and Christians adopted the Easter egg in the 13th century to show the new life, rebirth depicting the resurrection or rebirth of Christ so therefore, the Easter Egg tradition entered the scene. Going back to my childhood, I can remember the excitement of coloring or as some people refer to dying the eggs (I prefer coloring). We had those color pellets and had to dissolve them in a glass of vinegar and wallah, a blue, yellow, green, red, pink, etc. would be created. We had the wax pencil and did we get creative. Dressing up for church with all of the Easter frills, we were off. Sunday, after the meal, we gathered in the car, drove to the park, and the hunt began.
I always wondered what happened to the “unfound eggs” but after many attempts and the relentless counting, we always came up short at least one or more eggs, never to be found. We pronounced the winner and then the traditional eating of some colored eggs began. For the smaller children, we had help from one of our parents and I loved the home movies of our Mother and Father helping out, holding hands, pointing out the eggs and a lot of smiling pride when “we” found them. Oh, the Easter Egg Hunt was such a fun time and I am sure so many of you who participated in your own hunts are remembering your special moments too.
Today, we have the fancy methods of coloring eggs. A couple of days ago I saw where you can add colors to rice and then add the egg and shake it to have a great effect. Another new way is to use shaving cream. For some reason, I am not getting excited about coating the egg I am going to eat in shaving cream but I understand that is wiped off. Times do change but some things stay the same and what stays the same is the reason for Easter.

Now for the deeper thought….As we hunted for the eggs with such passion, Our Lord who sacrificed His Life so that we could have everlasting life, would like for us to hunt, seek, look for Him in every aspect of our Lives. This life is an Easter Egg Hunt with all of the objectives of achieving the highest Prize Egg by making it to Heaven and be in the presence of the One who made it possible for all good things in this life. This year and every year, when you find the Easter Egg, smile and thank Jesus for his “eggs of eternal life” and make sure you find them all and don’t leave any behind!
