TODAY THE WORDS are OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

TODAY THE WORDS are OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW. I am sure I don’t have to tell anyone who celebrates Christmas that the season has come to a close and now everyone is turning their thoughts to the New Year. This morning, in preparation for the packing up of all of the Christmas decorations and lights, my mind wrapped around the thought of OUT WITH THE OLD; IN WITH THE NEW. I hope you find my take on this quote interesting and that it may be thought provoking. My posts are for that reason of tickling the thought process and are not intended for agreement only. I am also a firm believer in Two Sides To Every Story and welcome different points of view on any given topic.

“Ring out the old, ring in the new.”

Alfred Tennyson (a.k.a. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson; 1809-1892)

       English poet

Famous line from Tennyson’s In Memoriam A.H.H. (1850)

“Yesterday, today was tomorrow

And tomorrow, today will be yesterday

So, ring out the old, ring in the new
Ring out the old, ring in the new
Ring out the false, ring in the true.”

       George Harrison (1943-2001)

       English rock musician

From the lyrics of his 1974 song “Ding Dong, Ding Dong” (included on the Dark Horse album)

Whether it be ring out the old, ring in the new, what I do like is the reflection of “Ring out the false, ring in the true.” At this time of the year or at this time in our lives, we should reflect on what is old in our spirits such as grudges, hate, resentment, greed, jealousy, arrogance, anger. Release those old feelings or attitudes and open hearts for new and fresh feelings of love, charity, compassion, understanding, and forgiveness along with acceptance. I want to give us a visual to work with since gift giving is usually abundant during the holiday season. When we open a present, especially something we wanted or needed so badly; we are jubilant and so excited. It is new and untouched with no marks or tears on it. It smells so nice and we like touching it.
With this feeling in mind, it brings me to my deeper thought……When we find peace in our souls; when we stop thinking of ourselves and we think of others first; when we seek to give love rather than make it necessary to receive love first; and when we find more goodness to show others than expect others to always show us goodness; we have been given the Gift of Life and Love from Our Heavenly Father. We smile more; we laugh more; we give more; we expect less; and we are happier than we have ever been.  We have truly practiced the “Ring out the Old, Ring in the New. Ring out the False, Ring in the True.”

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT, BEFORE THE NIGHT, BEFORE CHRISTMAS. I thought I would write a special post as we move into the Christmas celebration with a little humor. Christmas being a religious celebration sometimes puts a strain on all of us who try to make sure everything is perfect and in reality, some of our fondest memories are when we have “those” moments where nothing goes right. I want to share some of the funny times I remember at Christmas time and by revealing these times, you may recall your own funny Christmases or other holidays.
As a child, one of four children, two boys and two girls with less than 5 years age difference; we loved Christmas as we looked at it more from a commercial aspect in those years with Santa at the forefront. We knew Christ was born on Christmas day and had heard the biblical story and it seemed fascinating, but Santa had gotten more attention. I am not saying this to be sarcastic but it was our focus then. We went to visit Santa and sat on his knee and laid our every want and even things we didn’t need on him to provide. Our parents really played into the “Be a good girl or boy and Santa will come on Christmas Eve and you will receive presents”. This would have a good sale if when my parents as well as my aunt and uncle left all of us children at home alone. Gift search was on! We would look and look until we found them. Oh yeah, we got to carefully open (and for those of you thinking kids couldn’t open presents without them being disheveled; you would be wrong) and then we re-wrapped them. The best part is our parents seem to never discover the misdeed so we were so surprised when we opened our gifts on Christmas morning. Talking about blowing the concept of Santa bringing us gifts when we had seen them in the closet THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!
This little bit of deceit should have taught me a lesson, but I must be a hard study as when I was married the first time, my husband in an attempt to allow me to buy what I wanted would give me cash as my present. For some reason, this was not pleasing to me as remember I liked opening presents more than one time and it came back to haunt me or perhaps it was a little penance for bad behavior in my childhood. I fussed about not having presents to open and I must have been persuasive because finally, he went out and bought me presents and they were wrapped. Oh no, I could feel my past catching up with me. I walked by the tree; I stopped to look at those presents; I picked them up and tried to figure out what they were. Oh no, I began to sweat; the urge was overpowering and I couldn’t resist. I had to open those presents; I was experienced in re-wrapping; what was the harm?
I opened each one and being the expert I was; I re-wrapped each one of them. I was so pleased at the presents and I won’t list them here but he had bought great presents for me. I had gotten presents; surprises. I acted so surprised as I had when I was a child. The difference was I had grown up; I had a conscience; I confessed; and I received the punishment as he was so angry I had not only opened the presents, I denied opening them and acted surprise. It was not a happy Christmas or even a Happy New Year.
Now for deeper thought……Don’t open your presents before you are supposed to open them! In reality, I learned several lessons. Honesty is important and should be a high priority. God loves us even when we exercise bad judgment but God wants us to learn those lessons and not do those same mistakes again. Usually, and this is the most important lesson….Realize that the reason for Christmas was God’s sacrifice to send His Only Son so that we can understand the purpose of Christ’s birth and sacrifice. Christ came so that we, humans with all of our weaknesses, can have Eternal Life and obtain the best Gift, not from Santa, but from Our Heavenly Father….Eternal time with Him!
Christmas message from the blog’s author..me! To all of you who read my blog and continue to support my writings….May you and your family receive the true blessings of Christmas by enjoying your time with your loved ones with reverence for the Christmas season and to continue love for each other throughout the Happy New Year! Until we read again……Arline Miller, Author

TODAY THE WORDS are LOVE IN A BISCUIT

TODAY THE WORDS are LOVE IN A BISCUIT. This past week, someone I am close to had created and experimented with the biscuit recipe. He shared the recipe with me and I tried them. Needless to say, they are delicious. I, of course, being the proud cook I am, posted my biscuits with sawmill sausage gravy I had made. Requests for the biscuits and the gravy came from different directions until I had to message Mark Lott to see if I could share the recipe. His reply was, Share it with a smile. Wow, what love is in that statement. Comments from my friends led me to believe there is more in a homemade biscuit….there is love! I am sharing the recipe for Mark’s remarkably delicious biscuits but I also want to share some sweet thoughts about love associated with biscuits and the love added into them.
One of my friends Lonnie Smith whose Mother was a great cook remarked when I posted the picture of the biscuits I made, “These look like my Mama’s biscuits.” I replied back, “Thanks and I know that is a good compliment.” He also told me he always got the middle biscuit. The middle biscuit was always deemed the prize biscuit.
My husband, who is a true biscuit lover, his Mother apparently made biscuits to rival all contenders. I never got to meet her but her reputation as making a superb biscuit is one of his precious memories as well as his sons who smile when they talk about their MeeMaw and it is with a lot of love. Yesterday, when he was eating my biscuits, Greg said, “These biscuits are really good. You got them as close as anyone can get to Momma’s biscuits.” I am telling you that made my heart sing.
My Momma baked biscuits and we would save one each time for her now sacred biscuit pudding (If you look at the older posts for Biscuit Pudding, that is a wonderful story in itself) and I can tell you I can make a great biscuit pudding, but it never is as good as the one she made. It was her love that made that pudding so special.
Now for the deeper thought…,you should be seeing the focus point of the Love in a Biscuit. Beside having a great recipe and using the proper techniques, it is the love one puts into the pan as well as the biscuits. It is the look of love on the one eating something made with love which makes the experience so wonderful. When we do anything in life, whether it is making biscuits or spending time with those we love, or extending some love to a stranger; life is better when cooked or lived with love.

TODAY THE WORDS are BEFORE IT IS CHRISTMAS MORN

TODAY THE WORDS are BEFORE IT IS CHRISTMAS MORN. Sometimes a poem will come into my head and this is how it came, unedited and in its original form for you to read and feel the sense of the meaning of Christmas from my heart to yours. Enjoy the holiday season with your loved ones and if possible, extend the love of Christmas to strangers.

BEFORE IT IS CHRISTMAS MORN
When the snow falls and the wind blows
Our hearts start to feel warming glows.
We start to bake; we begin to cook
During the while, we turn to look.
We want to see; we want to guess.
More is better; don’t think about less.
One thought; maybe it is that time
For us to stop adding the thyme.
Maybe we should begin to think of many
Families who may not have a lot or any.
There is time before Christmas Morn
To give of ourselves to those who are torn.
Because when we think; Christ came to us
Without the frills and not any fancy fuss.
God’s Gift wasn’t wrapped with ribbons or bows.
When we receive His Heavenly Love, it shows.

Before Christmas morn, may we bow our head
With thanks for the sacrificial life He lead.
Nothing is more important for us to do
Than to spread Christ’s love to all of you.
When the snow has fallen; the wind lowed
May Christ’s Love be the best gift bestowed.
May we look toward the Heavenly sky

On Christmas Morn and know the reason why.

TODAY THE WORDS are THE ROADS LEAD US HOME

TODAY THE WORDS are THE ROADS LEAD US HOME. Over the years we find ourselves moving away from our home town with the exception of those who stay behind and keep the home fires burning. We return for brief visits and we ride down the same streets we rode when we lived in the very town we remember. I was born in Douglas, GA and some of you who don’t know me may know some of our famous residents. Jennifer Nettles, who has gone from singing in Sugarland to singing on her own and starring in Broadway in Chicago as well as hosting a lot of award shows. Her latest amazing success is starring in the story as Dolly Parton’s mother when Dolly was a child with big dreams.

John Glosson who was a contender and tough competitor in Duets where he sang with Jennifer. He has a successful business in Douglas and I feel confident he is singing all the time. Joshua Peavy, who was the top 5 performer on Rising Star. Maybe there is something in the water in Douglas as it seems there is quite a lot of singing talent to spare in my hometown. It missed me apparently. There are authors like Peggy Mercer, who I can’t count how many books she has written and still writing books and songs; Oscar Patton who has written at least 5 books, Don and Penny Griffin whose book hit the best sellers list and I am sure I am missing someone else. Even I got the writer’s bug and am writing my second book and write this blog which has been around since 2012. How many people remember The Bushmen, a local band. We have a lot of colorful history in Douglas too but I will leave that for another blog post. All of this achievement sounds wonderful but what makes Douglas so special?

Let me take you back to the Douglas I grew up and I think you will see what I am attached to my hometown and all roads take us home either in the physical sense or at least in our minds and hearts.
I can’t cover all of the great things or people I grew up by growing up in Douglas, but Carol Ray Morgan, who is the director of The Heritage Station Museum really knows her stuff. When I was privileged to go there for my first book signing, it was a walk down memory lane with friends too numerous to name who came out to support me. On my author’s page, I have the photos. What I remembered was when I was very small, there was a cafe right where the railroad tracks were located called Lillie’s Cafe. My Mother was a waitress there and I can remember the smells of the wonderful food they served. I remember the table cloths. It seemed fancy to me because in those days, we did not eat out very much. In all of my travels, I still go back to the fried chicken at Lillie’s Cafe. I can’t talk about the food in Douglas without mentioning some of the other wonderful memories which stay warm in my heart. I am remembering the ole Dairy Queen before it had a new home on Peterson Ave. being located where the I Like It Restaurant restaurant (we called it a fancy restaurant when it first opened)used to be. Back to the Dairy Queen, place where my sister worked while she was in school and amazingly she stayed skinny while making those cones and shakes. Also, who in Douglas remembers Wesley Thomas at the drive through window when it was in the first location? He went on to manage some franchised restaurant in Florida. Wesley would smile at everyone and everyone knew him. That is the kind of town we have.

I can’t mention Douglas without mentioning Holt’s Bakery. A little background, my Mother’s brother, Uncle Cecil Holt started the bakery in a little building where Vickers Music was next to for a lot of years. My Mother and Aunts worked there and I worked at Sears through a school program across the street. I thought working at the bakery where all of the great sweets were made was my ideal job until they had a girl out and asked if I could help out when I wasn’t scheduled to work. Oh yeah, I had hit an earthly heaven and it was so sweet….that is until I had sugar all over me, dusted in my hair and on my clothes and when that week was through; I was through. You can believe it or not, but I didn’t eat sweets for a long time. I found out the best way is to buy those sweets as I got sweeter than I ever thought possible.

In retrospect, I remember Kent’s grocery where they had hoop cheese and Momma would send me to get a slice and she would measure it with her fingers for me to get it right. I would put it on “our bill” and Mom would pay the bill each week. It was like visiting family and Mr. and Mrs. Kent even knew our Chihuahua Dooley and called us when Dooley got mad with us after tearing up the blinds and sat in the middle of the road with the traffic going both ways. That is the kind of town I grew up in.

I could go on and on as this is the kind of Douglas gal I am and there are so many more great people I would love to mention and may do a revisit soon. What I would like to say is no matter how far we travel we think of those special people in our town who have reached out, stayed friends, and as I wish them well; so do they. That is just the kind of great folks they are. If you are passing through Georgia, and want to get a great feel of my hometown; stop in Douglas and check the folks out. There are a lot more living there now than in my younger days, but let them know one of their home grown girls named Arline Lott Miller says Hi!

TODAY THE WORDS are DO YOU HEAR THE CHRIST CHILD CRYING?

Today, the words are DO YOU HEAR THE CHRIST CHILD CRYING? With a poem which came to me early in a December morning last year. In the events of more senseless deaths, I thought I would share it again.

Do you hear the Christ child crying, do you hear Him cry?

He loved the children and said Come unto Me.
He offered us salvation only through His name.
He held all of us sinners in His Heart without blame
But He died so we could live, so why Oh why does He Cry?
He looks down from the glory of heaven’s sky
And sees so many of the little children die,
Evil is to blame and a tear drops from His eye.
I bled for all of you, children are loved most high.
But I died so you could live, so why Oh why must I cry?
Do you hear the Christ child crying, do you hear him cry?
Why oh why, did I have to die; why do I have to cry?
People, you need to listen as I am the Only One to set you free.
Stop your hate and let the little children safely be.
I died for you to be heavenly. My tears are for thee.
Live for me; you will see I will not cry if you worship Me.
Do you hear the Christ child crying, do you hear Him cry?

Why oh why, did He have to die; why does He still cry?

Note from Arline Miller, blog author and writer of this poem. 12/15/2014
This inspiration came to me at 4 am one morning and it woke me. I have held it until now, but when I keep seeing innocent children being beheaded and killed by other means; my heart keeps returning to this message. Please take a minute, not for my words but for the message in these words. God loves little children who are innocent. We need and should protect all children from harm. During this time of year, let us be humbled and pray for peace and good will on this earth. May God allow love to overcome any hate toward any person or animal. Blessings on you is my Christmas prayer.

TODAY THE WORDS are A CHRISTMAS WISH

TODAY THE WORDS are A CHRISTMAS WISH. In our world we have many more opportunities to receive at Christmas. From parties at work, church, friends, and families, we are constantly exchanging presents and dinners. This year I want to present a Christmas wish for all of us to consider.

If we wish for a Christmas filled with Christ’s love and the wonder of His Birth, we would be so blessed to receive a big present, as a matter of fact, universal sized filled with unconditional love; absolute forgiveness, acceptance of others, charity beyond comprehension, and integrity with built in honesty, more and more goodwill. I have been looking at everyone’s decorations and working on our home and it is evident, we get excited about the spirit of Christmas Children are taken to see Santa and to have their pictures taken in their little Christmas red or green outfits and are truly adorable.
Relax everyone, as I am not criticizing Christmas traditions and I love the excitement in the children’s eyes as much as the next one. This is not what this wish is about. The wish is for us to recognize nothing “Santa” can bring compares to what Christ has already given to each one, the children, the young adults, the middle aged, and the older people too. He gave us the ultimate gift of love. I wrote on Facebook and I wanted to repeat It will not be the presents we give our children and grandchildren they remember when we are gone; it is the love, the hugs, and the stories we share which will live on in their hearts.” This is also what Christ gave us by His Unconditional Love. There are days, and it is most of them, I feel so unworthy and  I wonder why God loved us so much and sent His Only Begotten Son to take human form and sacrifice himself for us to have an eternal celebration, the likes no earthly celebration or party can compare. When a child receives a present, his or her eyes light up with a radiant glow and smiles follow.

Now for the deeper thought….As “children” of God, we have a gift of eternal life waiting to be unwrapped. Some of us have experienced unwrapping this present and it was so radiantly brilliant, the glow was almost blinding. It entered our souls and we are forever changed. Some, however, have looked at this present, thought it was so pretty, but they keep wondering if “it will fit” and “will it be comfortable” and “will they have to throw away the old life” and so many other obstacles. I say as one who asked those questions years ago, “Unwrap the Love of Jesus” on His Birthday and you will receive the best present you have ever received. That is my Christmas wish for all who need love in their lives, help with life’s problems, a home in Heaven, and peace and joy!

TODAY THE WORDS are DOES THE GRINCH TRAIN CATS?

Winston the Cat affectionately called Winnie

TODAY THE WORDS are DOES THE GRINCH TRAIN CATS? With all of the busy time of the season starting to fasten its pace on all of us who celebrate Christmas, I find it a great escape to think of something light and comical to relieve some stress. On Facebook someone posted a video of cats attacking Christmas trees and all sorts of things and it was hilarious. It reminded me of my daughter’s cat Winston, or Winnie as we “affectionately” called this black furry creature who was too smart for his own good. Winnie lived a long life through no help from him; he seemed to be a self destructive as he was destructive.
I thought I would share a little thought for all of you who read the story of  How The Grinch stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. We remember how he loved to interrupt the normal routine…..Well, Winston loved the same thing and this leads me to my thought….I think The Grinch trained Winnie as well as other cats. They pounce, they sneak, they prowl, they take things, and they love to aggravate.
Yep, I think I may be on to something. Cats must be trained to be on high alert; trained to follow lights or objects; trained to confuse the “enemy” by acting all innocent while planning their next attack; trained to walk on their hind legs to get into a better offensive position; and for sure, they are trained to take out any dog who fails to obey them and be at their beck and call.
When my daughter was on college breaks, she loved to go to concerts with her friends therefore leaving her Mother at the mercy of Sir Winston, the cat. We got along fine for most of the time as I bribe pretty fair with the treats and Winnie was more than happy to push the treat can off the coffee table at the appropriate time (like an alarm clock) when he felt he needed a treat. I obliged to keep peace. We had to have a meeting of the cat and human mind when he thought he could liven up the peacefulness by jumping on my kitchen counter…..And then it began……apparently Winnie had been trained in aerobatics and the chase was on! The Grinch failed to warn Winnie of the water pistol known to stop him in his tracks!!!
I am sure the Grinch taught Winnie to seek revenge and one day I came in and couldn’t find that cat of mystery anywhere in my apartment. I sought him everywhere calling out his name and even stooping to shaking the treat can which could bring him from the far corners of the world but not this day. This day was the day Winnie decided to make my heart race from the thought he had escaped and what would I tell my daughter, Missy, if I couldn’t find him. I passed the Christmas tree numerous times, double digit visits right by it and heard nothing. I picked up my car keys after seeing the card the pest control guy had left…..Oh no, the panic was setting in. I was panicking and then I spotted two eyes on a high branch of my Christmas tree and there behind those eyes was that black cat hiding on that branch and I think he was laughing! He had been there all of the time taking out his revenge on me. His training had paid off; he had stolen my Christmas spirit as I was thinking acts of revenge myself and then I stopped……then I prayed…..and I think Winnie prayed with me for safety from my glowing eyes.

Now for the deeper thought…..Sometimes in life, it can be very serious, worrisome, scary, terrifying at times. Those are the times to stop and pray for help. It is not a shame to recognize our weaknesses and times we need to ask for help. We need to pray for thanks as I am sure, trained or not, both Winnie and I prayed that day for thanks of survival for both of us. Be lighthearted in life; we are just human and we can laugh at ourselves when necessary. Winston left us after using up all his nine lives and borrowing a couple of lives from other cats for sure, but he gave us good times too. One day I will write a book on Winston, the cat the Grinch trained.
The Author’s thought for Cat Lovers Everywhere. It takes a special person to love a cat. For all of my friends who are the ambassadors for the feline fur balls, I love everyone’s else’s cat but I must be a dog lover since I don’t own any but I have to say I enjoyed the good times with Winston.

TODAY THE WORDS are THEY LAID SANTA OFF THIS YEAR

TODAY THE WORDS are THEY LAID SANTA OFF THIS YEAR. What? Have you heard?  Santa can stay at the North Pole with Mrs. Santa Claus. Let me give you some background information on this breaking story. Santa has been a vital part of the commercial part of Christmas utilizing a great marketing strategy to encourage sales for “all of the good little boys and girls” and even for the grown up children. Parents have struggled to fill Santa’s sleigh with all kind of goodies so he can leave them under the Christmas trees, grab the cookies and down the milk, and go back up the chimney. So why is Santa laid off this year, you ask?
Employers have to look at the big picture of the business. It is not reflective only from the Most Likable Employee since Santa would corner that award every year. It is not based on productivity as I don’t know of any other employee who can cover the world in one night, deliver better than UPS and the Post Office combined. Santa’s record of attendance has been perfect, so why lay this great employee off? It boils down to one thing….Lack of good behavior from both the children and the grown ups.

We have seen a lot of bad behavior both in parents and children……We could see a rise in a lot of pieces of coal left in stockings. From what is this conclusion derived? They conducted studies, the news media (which also should not receive any goodies either from reporting distorted news reports) and found people trying to be popular more than good; found children being disrespectful to their parents, siblings, law officials, and teachers. Demerits have been issued in huge amounts but were only shredded to stay politically correct. Santa doesn’t like the words “politically correct” and likes to call it like it is. Is that why Santa is out? Who is going to replace Santa? Is he going to be replaced or has the position of Santa become obsolete?
I have written this satire for a big life message. Life only works if we participate in a high moral endeavor. We cannot expect the “good” things in life if we give only “bad” efforts. We have to buy in to the theory “You better watch out; you better not pout. Santa Claus is coming to town. He knows when you are sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. He knows when you’ve been good or bad; so be good for goodness sake.”
Now for the deeper thought…… I would like to ask you to replace the word Santa Claus in these lyrics with God. “You better watch out; you better not pout. God is coming to town. He knows when you are sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. God knows when you’ve been good or bad; so be good for goodness sake.”  Maybe some people don’t believe in Santa Claus and even some people don’t believe in God. That is a person’s right; but for me and my house, we want to leave a plate of a good, charitable, honest life out for God to see how we have been behaving and thank God for each present of blessings every day.

DAILY FEATURED BIBLE VERSE:

But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.
